Science Interests:

Biff builds and deploys ground-based and airborne optical instruments to study the middle and upper atmosphere. In Feb 2013, he successfully flight tested new sodium and Rayleigh lidars on the NCAR Gulfstream V. Biff has been working with the ALOMAR sodium lidar in northern Norway since its installation in 2000. He has been a principal operator of that lidar and has supported a large number of joint lidar/rocket campaigns such as summer and winter MaCWAVE, DELTA, ROMA, ECOMA, ECOMA/MASS, Hotpay2, and DELTA2. For the last few years, Biff has been co-PI of the lidar project managing the repair and operation of the lidar, data analysis, and scientific coordination with many European American collaborators. Biff has operated an OH imager at the Platteville Atmospheric Observatory from 2001-2005 and at ALOMAR from 2005 to the present, and recently deployed an sodium imager to the South Pole Station from 2009-2011. Scientifically, Dr. Williams specializes in the analysis and interpretation of lidar, imager, and rocket data to investigate gravity wave and tide propagation, breakdown, momentum flux deposition, and convective and dynamic instabilities. He has also investigated sodium chemistry, sporadic sodium layers, and the relationship between sodium density, polar mesospheric clouds and radar echoes.
